Q&A about Tourist Visa or TR Visa in Thailand

Foreigners of some nationalities who wish to travel to Thailand for a short term require a Tourist Visa or TR Visa to enter Thailand. The applicant must apply for a visa to enter Thailand for tourism purposes from the Royal Thai Embassy or the Thai Consulate-General in the country in which they hold nationality only.

Q : What are the criteria for applying for a Tourist Visa or TR Visa?

A : 1. Those who do not hold Thai nationality must obtained a Tourist Visa, except those who are exempt from visas for entry into the country.
     2. Must not be of a nationality or type prescribed by the committee monitoring official proceedings of officers of the Immigration Bureau. (In case of the following natinalites ,extension of stay permit will not be longer than 7 days; Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Nepal, Togo, Nigeria, Uganda)

A : 1. Application Form TM.7
     2. One photograph, size 4X6 cm. (not older than 6 months)
     3. Passport with at least 6 months validity remaining
     4. Copy of passport, visa, latest authorization stamp

A : The place to apply for a visa (all types) is at the Immigration office both in Bangkok and other provinces.

Q : How to apply for a visa extension for the first time? How long for a visa extension they will receive?

A : The applicant will be granted a visa extension of up to 30 days from the date of the visa expires, except Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Nepal, Togo, Nigeria, Uganda, for only 7 days. However, it depends on the consideration of the Immigration Officer in Thailand.

Q : For applying for a second visa extension, how long for the process of the visa consideration from the date of receiving the petition?

A : The officer will process the visa extension for 15 days from the date of receiving the petition. During the waiting period, you can stay in Thailand legally.

Q : How many days of visa validity that enough for changing the type of visa?

A : You must have a remaining visa validity period of not less than 15 days. If it is less than 15 days, you cannot change the type of visa.

Q : Can someone else submit an application on behalf of the applicant for a change type of visa?

A : Another person cannot submit the visa application on behalf of the applicant because the applicant has to present and submit the application in person. However, on the date of receiving the visa, they can authority to someone else to receive the visa.

Q : Foreigners, who enter Thailand on a Tourist Visa or TR Visa and want to work in Thailand, can they change the type of visa to a work visa?

A : Foreigners can change the type of visa but they have to work with the employer company that meets the conditions of the work visa.

Q : Can foreigners entering Thailand with a Tourist Visa (TR Visa) change the type of visa to a Non-O Visa?

A : Foreigners can change the type of visa but they must meet the conditions of that type of Non-O visa such as
1. Foreigners who are married to a Thai person/guardian of a Thai child
2. Family/dependents of Non - Immigrant "B" visa holders with a work permit in Thailand.
3. Family/dependents of retirement visa holders who are under 50 years old.

Q : How many days does it take to change the visa type from Tourist Visa to a Non-B Visa? and how many days are allowed to stay in Thailand?

A : The visa approval will process within 30 working days from the date the documents are complete under the conditions set by the Immigration Office. Also, they will allow staying in Thailand for no more than 90 days to apply for a Work Permit.
