What are the procedures to register a marriage between Foreigners and Thai people?
Marriage registration between Thai and foreigner is important thing that must aware of because most people do not know what documents requires for marriage registration? What documents are required for marriage registration??
For foreigner
- Legalization Form
- Passport and a copy
- Affidavit regarding the marital status of the person from the respective embassy with translation
- Divorce Certificate and a copy (if applicable) (For some countries, it is possible to apply at the embassy of a foreigner in Thailand)
- Other documents such as Certificate of Name Change (if applicable)
For Thai Nationals
- Legalization Form
- Identification Card and a copy
- The House Registration Certificate and a copy (In the event of change the last name and first name, please bring the original together)
- Two witnesses and the identification card of witnesses. They must be a close person such as parents, siblings, relatives
- Divorce Certificate and a copy (if applicable)
- 1 Thai interpreter to translate languages for foreigners (Suggest that one of the witness should be one person who can translate)
- Other documents such as Certificate of Name Change (if applicable)
- Death Certificate (in the event of spousal death)
Remark: The above documents may be changed depending on foreign nationality.
What are the qualifications for those who want to register the marriage?
- Either of them should not be less than 17 years of age and must bring a parent or guardian to give consent
- 20 years old able to do it by himself
- Male or female must have Thai nationality
- Either of them should not be an insane person or adjudged incompetent
- Both of them should not be in blood relations in the direct ascendant or descendant line, or brother or sister of full or half blood i.e. should no be with in the prohibited degrees of relationship.
- Either of them should not have a spouse at the time of marriage.

- A widow can marriage after expiry of 310 days from such death or termination of marriage, but before such period if:
* A child has been born during such period;
* The divorced couple remarry;
* There is a certificate issued by a qualified doctor who is a lawful physical practitioner in medicine showing that the woman is not pregnant;
* There is an order of the Court allowing the woman to marry
Where to be filed a marriage registration?
- If you are in Thailand, you can be filed at any District Office or Minor District Office.
- If you are outside of Thailand, you can be filed at the Thai embassy in that country.
* It can only be registered between Thai nationals or between Thai and foreign nationals and is registered under Thai law. If in the future it is necessary to move to the country of origin of the husband or wife, there is no need to register the marriage again but you can contact to certify the marriage registration of that country.
What are the procedures of marriage registration??
- Must apply for a certificate of celibacy from the foreign embassy in Thailand
- Translate a certificate of celibacy to Thai and legalized the documents by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Make an appointment with the district officer and bring documents to the date of appointment with interpreters and witnesses (The witness must bring an ID card together)
- Contact the Office of the Registrar and handing the documents to the officer
- Fill in the form that given by the officer
- The officer will ask about the relationship of both parties such as fellowship period, length of living together, what is the prefix for the woman and does she want to use the male surname or not.
- An interpreter will translate the details of the marriage registration for both parties.
- After finished, the officer will give the register of marriage (KhorRor.2) and the marriage certificate(KhorRor.3) to both parties 1 set.
For those who plan to apply for a visa or return to their country to notify that they have married in Thailand. It is recommended that you should ask for a copy of the English version of KhorRor.2 from the district office that they can issue documents in English.
After the marriage registration is complete, both the male and the female can choose as follows.
- Use the maiden name on both parties
- Female uses her husband's last name
- Male uses his wife's last name
- Female uses her husband's last name, Male uses his wife's last name
- Female married to a foreign husband can use the maiden name as a middle name
* When complete the marriage registration, Thai nationals who have changed their surname should hurry to complete the name change in the civil registration and make a new passport as soon as possible.
