Q&A Covid-19: What to do when a Work Permit and a Work Visa was expired?
During the epidemic of the Covid-19 outbreak, many countries around the world closed their countries, including Thailand. Many people are experiencing a Visa and a Work Permit nearing expiration. Some people have already expired. Therefore, there is a question of how to proceed if the Visa and the Work Permit have expired? Can be renewed or can change the visa type?

For example.
- Japanese employees are still in Thailand.
- Non-B Visa will expire on 15/06/20
- The duration of stay will expire on 15/06/20
- A Work Permit will expire on 15/06/20
- Today is 22/06/20
From this case, both the Non-B Visa, the period of stay, and the Work Permit of Japanese employees have expired.
If the visa cannot extended in time causing the Non-B Visa to expire and staying longer than the specified period of stay. All you have to do is;
Regular Procedure
- You must travel out of the country and then apply for the Non-B Visa only from the Thai embassy or the Thai consulate in the country.
- When the visa expires, foreigners who overstay will have to pay a fine of 500 baht a day, a maximum of 20,000 baht, and immediately leave the country.
Special case due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 situation
- The government temporarily closed the country that makes it impossible to leave the country. You have to wait to announce when the country will open again.
- Currently, the Immigration Bureau is not open border. Suggesting that you wait to announce when the country will open border again. Once the checkpoint is opened, then it can travel outside the country to obtain a new visa.
- The government has announced the extension of time for foreigners. (Temporary residents) can stay in Thailand until 31/07/63 without having to renew the visa without paying any fines.
When the Work Permit has expired, the employer and employees must do is;
- Foreign employees unable to renew the Work Permit, they must apply a new Work Permit only.
- The employer must inform the termination of employment within 15 days of the expiration of the employee's Work Permit at the Department of Employment.
- If the employer informs the termination of employment later than 15 days, they shall be punished with a fine not exceeding 20,000 baht.
- If foreign employees still need to continue to work in Thailand, they must leave the country to apply for a new Non-B Visa only.
- After entering Thailand with a Non-B Visa, you have to hurry to apply for a Work Permit within 1 month at the Department of Employment.
- After receiving a Work Permit, you have to apply for an extension of Non-B Visa at Immigration Bureau 30-45 days before the expiration date which must remain for the duration of stay.
For foreign employees who are still not able to renew a visa in Thailand, suggesting to call the Employment Office in the area or in the province in which the workplace is located.
The location to apply for a visa and report 90 days.
- Workplace in Bangkok: Submitted at Immigration Division 1, Chaeng Wattana Government Center, Building B, Floor 2
- Workplace is in upcountry: Submitted at the immigration office in the province where the workplace is located.
The location to apply a new Work Permit or renewal Work Permit.
- Workplace in Bangkok: Submitted at the Department of Employment in 10 working areas in Bangkok. For example, the company is located in Sai Mai District, Bangkok, you have to submit to the Bangkok Employment Office, Area 5, Min Buri.
- Workplace is in upcountry: Submitted at the employment office in the province where the workplace is located. For example, the company is located in Pathum Thani Province, you have to submit to the Pathum Thani Employment Office.
However, the government has announced the extension of time for foreigners. (Temporary residents) can stay in Thailand until 31/07/63 without having to renew the visa and no need to report 90 days, no fee, and do not need to submit any documents which the Immigration Bureau will process for you automatically.
